‘The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.’ 1 Timothy 1.5
Love is rightly held up as the supreme goal for which we should aim. However, there is a tendency nowadays to regard it as rather sentimental and sugary – so long as we love each other, nothing else we do, say or believe really matters. This verse actually challenges such thinking, and like one of those colour charts with three interlocking circles of different colours that produce a unique colour in the middle, we learn how real love is formed.
The three ingredients are – a pure heart, a good conscience and a sincere faith. If you want to be loving, then these are the three areas you need to keep under careful watch.
Over the next few days we will look at each of these in turn, but before embarking on
this, spend a few moments recognising the amazing truth that the ‘goal of this command is love’. It is because God wants you to experience the wonder and effect of this in your life, that he is so desperate for you to catch the full extent of his love.
