‘…Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people.’ 1 Timothy 2.6
A ransom is when someone pays an agreed price to get something or someone back. In this case it is us held in captivity, and Jesus who gave himself as the price or the ransom for our freedom.
This is quite some thought, and you may well be wondering why Jesus would give himself as a ransom for you? Surely it must be because you are worth it. You being in captivity hurt Jesus so much that he was willing to do anything to gain your freedom.
It follows that if Jesus paid the ransom for you, his heartfelt desire must be that you enjoy being free. Take a moment to ponder those things that rob you of your freedom. They may be circumstances, illness, a memory or something completely different. Jesus did not come to bring captivity to you, but freedom, and finding that begins with this realisation.
Take a moment to let these words be yours – “Christ Jesus gave himself as a ransom for me.”
