“…a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.” Mark 14.13
These words appear in the account of Jesus arranging for two of his disciples to go ahead of him to prepare for the Passover meal he was about to share with his friends. The plan was that the man with the water jar would indicate to the disciples which was to be their meeting room. We have no idea how Jesus planned this meeting - or whether he didn’t at all and it was somehow a divine ‘set-up’!
However, what is a certainty is that if Jesus made the arrangements then the plans would work out accordingly. It would be unthinkable for the disciples to follow the man with the water jar to a certain place, only for the owner to look at them quizzically and ask “What room?”
Jesus has plans for all of us. At times you may well have felt confused by a particular situation, only to discover as you look back on it that you can indeed see the hand of God at work in it. At the time you may have been totally unaware of this but nonetheless, God has been at work planning, guiding and prompting you along the way.
It is an act of surrender at the beginning of each day to ask God to be with you, but also to recognise that his hand is always upon you - giving you strength and carrying you through life.
