‘And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge’ Ephesians 3.17-19
There is something of an anomaly in this verse! Paul seems to be saying that in order to grasp just how much Christ loves us, we have to be rooted in his love. In other words, we have to be rooted in the very thing that we want to grasp!
This is part of the mystery of our faith. We all want more of God - a deeper knowledge of him and more experience of his love – and the message seems to be to stand on what we do have so that it will release the door for God to give us even more. If you want to experience more of the love of God, then begin by taking seriously what you do know of his love.
What is your experience of God's love? Is it something you have discovered naturally and subsequently taken time to revel in, or is it a struggle for you and something you have to blindly hold on to by faith? If it is the latter, then keep on clinging to it by faith. Take a few minutes to proclaim God’s love even if you feel very little, since Paul is saying that by rooting and establishing ourselves in love, the door will open for us to experience so much more.
