‘A man with leprosy came to him and begged him on his knees, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”’ Mark 1.40
We are going to spend 5 days looking at this lovely story of Jesus healing a man suffering with leprosy. In many ways his attitude reflects our own as we approach God, and many of us would probably echo his words, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.” In other words, we know that God has the power to do whatever we ask him, but we are just not sure whether or not this is what he wants to do. Jesus responded to the man without hesitation, confirming that he did indeed want to heal him.
Today, let’s concentrate on the words this man put to Jesus. In particular, hold on to the second part of his statement and make it a declaration of faith: “…you can make me clean.” Repeat this phrase quietly to Jesus.
As you do so, begin by emphasising the word ‘you’. Let this become a statement of faith about the person of Jesus – he does indeed have the power and compassion to touch you. After a while switch your emphasis to the word ‘me’. You are not excluded from his mission and from receiving his touch - he loves you. Finally, let your emphasis rest on the word ‘clean’. Focus on your hopes and dreams of what he could do for you so that bold prayer follows: ‘Jesus, you can make me clean.’
