‘Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me;
and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. For it is the one who is
least among you all who is the greatest.”’ Luke 9.48
I don’t know if you consider yourself amongst the ‘greats’ of this world? Most of us
probably have a sense that if God were to rank people, then we would come way down his list of favourites. If you think like this, then this verse is so powerful as it completely reverses our thinking about who is great and who is not. In fact, it says that the one who is the least among us is the greatest.
If we were to take this verse at face value it would make such a difference. We would walk down the street looking for those who, in the eyes of the world, are ‘the least’ and be amazed to realise that they are really the greatest. If we thought of others in this light it might well encourage us to be there for them, to show kindness and bless them.
This message also means that we can’t be too quick to dismiss ourselves. Perhaps it is in your moments of greatest weakness, confusion and doubt that God’s heart really reaches out to you, for when you feel you are among ‘the least’, God sees you as amongst ‘the great’.
