"Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" John 1.29
This verse is about forgiveness. Jesus, the Lamb of God, is the sacrifice for our sins and he has paid the price for them in full.
Our perception of sin being taken away from us is often along the lines of it being removed from us - temporarily. Deep down many of us still believe there is a record of our failings kept somewhere and which will be waved in front of us the next time we sin; we might be forgiven, but only until the next time!
The healing we find through having our sins forgiven comes through the wounds of Jesus. In other words, forgiveness cost him dearly. It would cost him nothing to sweep them under the carpet, but it is the very cost of our sin to him that makes the forgiveness permanent.
Hebrews 8.12 quotes Jeremiah, and in these words God proclaims: "…I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." The sense behind this is that we may remember our sins only too well, but God does not. Our sins are removed from us just as if we had never committed them - such is the power of forgiveness.
As you sit with God now, rejoice in the amazing truth that you are utterly clean before him; he has paid for your sins and there is nothing more that you owe.
