‘…we have one who speaks to the Father in our defence – Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.’ 1 John 2.1
Whatever wrong we feel we have done, as well as trusting in God’s amazing love for us we also have Jesus speaking for us, not in judgment or condemnation, but in our defence – speaking on our behalf.
Does he need to do this? Is the Father so angry with us that if it wasn’t for the words of Jesus we would really be in trouble? Actually this message about Jesus speaking to his Father on our behalf is written for our benefit, as it enlarges our perception of the love and understanding God has for us. It is not that God is longing to punish us, but rather that because of his love for us he is listening to Jesus’ profound care and understanding of the situations we are going through.
When Jesus speaks in our defence, it is from the perspective of someone who knows exactly what we are going through. He was tempted in every single way that we are tempted; nothing we experience is unknown to him. When he speaks to his Father, it is because he understands what we are going through and remembers the feelings and temptations. He knows how hard it is.
Jesus does not look at us with a pained expression telling us ‘to get on with it’. Rather he sees us and whispers words in our defence to the Father: ‘I know what they are going through. It is hard for them - have mercy on them’.
For a moment catch the gentleness of Jesus as he sees your life and speaks to the Father about you.
