‘Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.’ Titus 1.4
Some people feel there is something rather stern about the image of God the Father. They would rather tun to Jesus with their problems, because somehow he seems kinder and more approachable. However, this verse cuts right through such thinking by presenting us with an image of the Father from whom grace and peace flow.
If you hold to the view of a Father God who seems distant, absent or somehow unapproachable, you would do well to remember that when Jesus was asked what the Father was like, he said: “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father.” (John 14.9). In other words, if you have a sense that Jesus is approachable, it is because he is reflecting the very approachability of God the Father.
God the Father did not give us Jesus as a ‘softer’ version of himself, but rather as an exact image of what he himself is like. Take a moment to gently whisper this word, ‘Abba’. It is the exact word Jesus used when he talked to his Father (Mark 14.36) and it reflects God’s longing to be known as Father; the one who knows everything about you and utterly loves you. As your Father, he longs to bring you grace and peace.
