“The LORD reigns!” 1 Chronicles 16.31
Another aspect of the kingship of God is that he is an active king. He is not powerless; rather, he is a God who acts, who responds to the cries of his people. However, on many occasions he doesn’t seem to be a God who sees injustice and sovereignly intervenes. Instead, he often seems to operate through us.
Hebrews 4.16 talks about us approaching the ‘throne of grace’ so that we might receive help. In other words, God’s throne is not distant and unapproachable, but is something to which we can come and from which transforming power flows.
God does indeed reign – he has a mission to change the injustice under which so many live – but it is us who are so often the doorways through which that mission flows. It begins with our prayer, our coming to him, approaching the throne of grace to find the help that is needed. It may well be that we are the answer to the injustice that grips many; we may be the hands of God to bring healing to others, a voice to the downtrodden, or action for those who cannot act for themselves.
Whatever the solution to an injustice, it begins with our coming to God’s throne of grace, compassion and power so that what is needed may flow from that.
