‘Hiram king of Tyre replied by letter to Solomon: “Because the Lord loves his people, he has made you their king.”’ – 2 Chronicles 2.11
Solomon was preparing to build the temple and discovered that the King of Tyre had some of the materials he would need, as well as some of the best skilled workmen, so he asked for help. The king of Tyre’s reply, provided for us in today’s verse, was such a graceful recognition that Solomon was God’s gift to the people.
In the same way that King Solomon was a gift of God’s love to his people, so Jesus – our King - is God’s gift of love to us. As we think about it, the goodness of God in Jesus is clear: he gives us the gift of salvation through Jesus’ work on the cross, the hope of healing through the power of his presence and comfort from the presence of the one who will never leave us. All of Jesus is a gift of God to us.
However, there may be times when we find the teachings of Jesus hard and it is at times like this that we need to remember that they are God’s gift to us - and not a drag. In his wisdom and love, God knew that the things Jesus said would liberate us beyond measure. Take a moment to focus on Jesus right now – possibly look at a cross or read some of his words in the Bible – and consciously thank the Father that Jesus is available for you and that his actions and words are the Father’s beautiful gift to you.
