‘The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.’ 1 Timothy 1.5
Sincerity of faith is important. We live in an age when it is easy for advertisers to make unjustified claims and for those in authority to make promises that are quickly broken. A sincere faith is genuine; genuinely held and genuinely expressed.
It can be easy to resort to clichés when we talk about our faith, saying ‘God knows best’ when you face a confusing disappointment, or telling others ‘God loves you’ when they are feeling badly let down. There is nothing wrong with these statements – they are absolutely true – but to be sincere in our faith means we don’t say anything to ourselves or others without really believing it to be true.
When you are disappointed and find yourself saying ‘God knows best’, take time to worship him for his presence in your situation and really believe in his lordship over it. Next time you tell someone ‘God loves you’, make sure you also show love and compassion for them. Make every effort to let your faith be sincere.
