‘…a woman came to him with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume...’ Matthew 26.7
One of the most powerful things about this lovely story of the woman who anointed the feet of Jesus is that he never asked her to do it. It was something she did spontaneously - and he loved her for it.
We like to know what God’s will is for our lives, and rightly so, but the difficulty arises when we don’t do something unless we think God specifically wants it. We miss out on the opportunities to do acts of devotion and kindness that will bring such joy to his heart. We are not in a position to anoint Jesus with oil, but we are in a position to walk down the road looking for opportunities to do acts of kindness, or to say an encouraging word to someone.
Each act of kindness and every uplifting word is actually far more than it seems. Jesus told a story about the day of judgment, when he would honour those who had blessed him. His listeners wanted to know when they had blessed him, and his response was that whenever they had blessed someone else, they had actually blessed him.
As you go about this day, seek to be a blessing to others. By doing this, the stunning truth is that you will be blessing Jesus as well.
