‘Let him lead me to the banquet hall, and let his banner over me be love.’ Song of Songs 2.4
These words don’t simply express a dream or a fanciful thought, but a reality. God has put you in a place where so much is available to you, and what’s more, he has expressed his deep love for you not because of what you have done but because of who you are – someone in whom he delights. So many people take the attitude that God will love them when something changes; perhaps when they feel they have done something extraordinary for him or when they have given sacrificially. However, this verse says that God has poured out his love and made everything available to you already – before you even did anything. This is so important when you want to approach God, either as part of your prayer time or because you have a need that you cannot meet for yourself, as it can be so tempting to wonder why he should help you. Why would he choose to listen to you? What have you done to deserve his help? The answer is that it is not about what you have done, but rather about what God has done. Take a few minutes to think about the wonderful love for you that is expressed in these words: ‘Let him lead me to the banquet hall, and let his banner over me be love’.
