‘Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness.’ Luke 11.34
Jesus is saying here that what we look at will shape us inside. The Message Bible puts it like this, ‘If you live wide-eyed in wonder and belief, your body fills up with light. If you live squinty-eyed in greed and distrust, your body is a dank cellar.’
This is about how we see God and how we see ourselves. If you see God as kind, loving, powerful and rich in mercy, this vision will shape the way you approach him and the things you bring to him. However, if you see him as tough, mean and grudging, this too will shape your approach to him. Similarly, if you see yourself as unconditionally loved by God, this will produce a completely different attitude within you than if you see yourself as a person of no consequence struggling alone.
The Bible is a beautiful window to the wonder of God and his love for you. Read about the love it reveals and be ‘wide eyed in wonder and belief’, so that your attitude towards God and your perception about yourself might be changed.
