‘In your majesty ride forth victoriously in the cause of truth, humility and justice; let your right hand achieve awesome deeds.’ Psalm 45.4
When we think of Jesus, it is often of his compassionate and profound gentleness to those in need. However, this psalm provides another description that is equally true; that Jesus is on the side of truth, humility and justice. He is working with great compassion, but he is also working for justice in our lives and in the lives of others.
When Jesus healed the sick in the Gospel stories, he was revealing his compassion for those who were in need. However, his commitment to bringing healing was also a statement of God's verdict upon sickness. This is what the Kingdom of God is about - the restoration of God's rule and the bringing about of God's desires.
When you pray for yourself, rather than simply phrasing your prayers as a 'wish list' to God, try offering your life as an open door to God's will, which has been revealed by Jesus. When you can do this, your prayers will take on a new confidence and authority.
Catching a sense of God's heart for justice also affects the way you see others. As well as praying for their needs, is there more you could be doing to promote God's justice? It may only be a small action, such as renewing your care for someone in need, but it's worth spending a moment considering whether anything comes to mind. If so, take a stand for God's justice by doing what you can, and aligning yourself with his heart.
