‘I have sought your face with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise.’ Psalm 119.58
There is something very special about seeking the face of God. It is about longing to know him more and be in his presence; longing for him beyond any specific desire for him to act according to your wishes. Of course, there may well be things God has laid upon your heart that he wants you to carry to him in prayer, but to seek his face is to come to him with no other agenda than wanting to be with him.
The second part of the verse picks up on this theme: it asks God to be gracious according to his promise. In other words, it is recognising that he is gracious and knowing that he cannot be anything else, as this is his character and what he promises. Believing this enables you to trust implicitly that the grace of God will flow.
So on a practical level, how can you focus on all this? Begin by giving time to prayer. If you only have a short time, the likelihood is that you will jump straight into your requests. Instead, try to give time to enjoy the graceful love of the Father, trusting that he loves your attentive presence even more than your prayers.
