![]() ‘In him and through faith in him we may approach God with freedom and confidence.’ Ephesians 3.12 When we talk about approaching God, a practical question to ask is ‘how?’ How do we approach the one who is there for us? The answer is - ‘with freedom’. This can mean a number of things. First, freedom implies that there is no ‘right’ way to come to him; no ‘set words’ or formula. We come as God’s beloved children, with the freedom of a toddler approaching their parent with upraised arms. We come to God with a freedom from the fear of what he will think of us. We also come with a freedom from our pasts. So often we think that something we have done disqualifies us from coming to him, but if it is true that our sins have been forgiven then they are well and truly paid for, so no longer stand against us. In fact, we are told in Hebrews 8.12 that God ‘remembers our sins no more.’ The final freedom we have is freedom from the present. The events and circumstances surrounding us are not the controlling forces in this world. The reality is that everything is beneath the feet of Jesus. When we come before him in freedom, it is a real freedom that gives us access to the wonder of the one enthroned on high and who is present with us now.
