‘For troubles without number surround me; my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see. They are more than the hairs of my head, and my heart fails within me.’ Psalm 40.12
At times it may be that you feel just like this! It’s not just that something is wrong with your life, but that there seem to be so many things piling up against you. These probably tend to dominate your vision so that you can’t really see past them and they make it difficult to find God.
A little later on in this psalm, David writes: ‘May all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you.’ The significance of this is that the same person who spoke about all his troubles also spoke about the reality of seeking God and being glad. In other words – whatever is going on, God is present. It may well be hard to find him, but he is there.
It might be helpful to look to his throne as God is actually above all the things that crowd against you. He is not ‘dethroned’ by them, but is longing for you to look up - as David did in the psalm - and despite everything that you might be going through to say along with David, ‘The Lord is great!’ (verse 16)
