‘The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.’ 1 Timothy 1.5
Your conscience should be like a clean sheet of paper on which God can write words to bring you back to him if you have wandered away. However, some people might think their conscience is more like an exercise book, crammed with jumbled writing, because they feel guilty about so many things.
A first step towards uncluttering your conscience is to receive, and believe in, the forgiveness God has given you through Christ. All the sins you have ever confessed are forgiven and there is nothing more God can do to pay the price for them.
The next thing you can do is to ask the Holy Spirit to bring to your mind anything that has happened recently that he wants you to bring into the light and love of God. This is not so that you feel condemned by your actions, but so that you can be set free from the burden and guilt of them.
Also give some thought to anyone else who has hurt or disappointed you - and forgive them. The more you do this and mean it, the more God will be able to write words on your heart that will draw you closer to him.
