![]() “She did what she could.” Mark 14.8 We have all probably been encouraged to listen to what Jesus wants us to do and to set our hearts on doing it, without distraction. Of course, this isn’t always easy as it can be hard to discern what Jesus is saying and many folk feel that instead of having a clear vision and purpose they simply bumble along trying to do good! This verse stands as a wonderful encouragement to those who respond to Jesus by simply doing what they can. There are very few stories recorded in all four Gospels and the account of Jesus being anointed is one of these. It records an event that Jesus found so extraordinary that he foresaw that it would be recorded all over the world. According to Mark’s account, a woman interrupted a meal at which Jesus was a guest and she lavishly anointed and cared for him in a very demonstrative way. There is no mention that she felt this was something that God had commanded her to do. Instead we are told that Jesus simply observed – “She did what she could”. Going around doing good is a description applied to Jesus (Acts 10.38), and if you feel that this is all you can manage then be encouraged, because you are reflecting him and bringing joy to his heart.
