‘Come to the sanctuary, which he has consecrated for ever.’ 2 Chronicles 30.8
There is something very beautiful about this invitation from King Hezekiah to his people, who had wandered away from God. What he is saying is that wherever they might feel they are spiritually, there was a place that they can always return to – a place of sanctuary and rest where they could meet with God. This is the place that God himself has established, a place that speaks about his willingness and desire that we come back to him.
The joyful thing is that this sanctuary is not far from us; in fact, it is within us. Paul speaks about us being temples of the Holy Spirit and the Spirit’s presence within us is the sanctuary that he has set apart.
What this means is that the God we long for is never far from us. In fact, he is only as far away as it takes to say the word, ‘Jesus’. To speak that name purposefully to Jesus is to speak face to face with the one who gave up everything to reveal the Father’s love to us. Speaking his name is about coming back to the sanctuary and finding rest. Take a few minutes to do that now.
