‘God is with us; he is our leader.’ 2 Chronicles 13.12
These words, spoken by King Abijah, were not just simple words. His army was facing decimation; he had 400,000 soldiers and his rival had twice that number. Yet whatever he lacked in manpower, Abijah made up for in faith. His faith was based on two things: God’s promise about the kingship of Israel and the fact that he knew God was with him. These were what enabled him to stand before his enemy with an impressive confidence.
The enemies facing us may not be a literal army, but may be just as destructive – an illness, hostility from others, thoughts that condemn us - and can wear us down. Yet we too have the same weapons as Abijah; the promises of God and his presence.
One promise, or revelation, that we carry with us is the statement from Ephesians 1.20-22: ‘he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet…’ In other words there is nothing more powerful than Jesus. The second promise is that he is with us.
What made the difference for Abijah was that he didn’t just know these two things, but he really believed them. As you face your own difficulties, whatever they are, take these words and repeat them to yourself until they become part of you: “Jesus, you are above all things, and you are here with me.”
