‘Then Jesus asked, “What is the kingdom of God like? What shall I compare it to?”’ Luke 13.18
An account of a person being healed featured immediately before Jesus posed this question. A woman had been sick for 18 years and as soon as Jesus saw her he set her free. The story took place in a synagogue and rather than the chief official rejoicing in what he had just seen, he complained that it had taken place on the Sabbath and told the people that if they wanted to get healed it should not be on the Sabbath.
After healing the woman, Jesus asked the question in today’s verse and went on to compare the kingdom of God to a tree in which birds could build their nests. In other words, the assembled people had all just seen a beautiful demonstration of the kingdom at work in one person’s life, and Jesus went on to declare that everyone could make their home within it. What he was saying is that the kingdom of God is for you.
It can be so easy to think that the wonderful things of God are always for other people. Why not you? As you come to God today, believe that his kingdom is for you. He loves you being with him and has so much to give you.
