‘…make every effort to add to your faith … perseverance’ 2 Peter 1.6
One of the most common excuses is this: “I tried it once, but it didn’t work.” This can apply to almost anything in life, including our Christian ministry or our attempts to draw on the power of Christ within us. Perhaps it is for this very reason that Peter added perseverance to his list of ways in which we can strengthen our spiritual lives.
Perseverance means that if we try something new and it is hard, or we discover that things do not turn out as we would like, we carry on anyway in the belief that God values our commitment and our vision. There are stories of people who prayed for individuals or events for years before they saw the fruit of their prayers. Indeed, Hebrews 11 contains references to those whose heroism was not in their achievements, but in their perseverance.
You carry the presence of God within you, and the fact that you may not see the daily outworking of this does not change this truth. Come back to it – God is in you. Take this into today, and the next day, and the day after. It is your faithfulness to this truth that daily opens the door for God to act through you.
