‘…do not forget the things your eyes have seen…’ Deuteronomy 4.9
Another way of remembering the things that God has done is to keep a spiritual journal. There are many ways of doing this, and what follows is only a suggestion.
You might like to start by thinking through the events of yesterday, and writing down what comes to mind; any particular joys, hardships or moments when you felt God was communicating with you in some way. Then give some thought to what this has taught you about yourself, and about God – and jot your thoughts down. Did you hear any words from someone else that you would like to record? A good practice is to read your Bible and make a note of whatever seems significant.
Then you may like to ponder the day ahead. Do you anticipate any particular moments of fear or anxiety? Write down what you would like Jesus to do for you in these times. In fact, it might be helpful to pause and listen to any spontaneous thoughts that come to you. Could this be the voice of Jesus for you?
Finally, and particularly once you have been keeping your journal for a little while, it is helpful to review past entries. What did you record yesterday, last week, a month ago, three months ago or a year ago?
As you become more familiar with all this, you will find yourself becoming more obedient to the call of God: ‘…do not forget the things your eyes have seen…’
