“…I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts.” John 5.42
Jesus is speaking to the Jewish leaders who want to persecute him, and in this blunt sentence he sees right into them and pinpoints the root of their attitudes and actions – they do not have the love of God within them. They are neither exhibiting his love nor receiving it.
Knowing and dwelling on God’s love is everything for us. Without it we may indeed set out to do marvellous deeds and noble causes may move us, but something will always be missing at the very core of our being. Perhaps it is because Jesus saw the danger of what happens to people when they move away from God’s love, that in his final meal with his disciples he urged them to remain in his love (John 15.9); to keep coming back to it and to make it a priority in their lives.
We are no different, and if his disciples were in danger of losing the knowledge of God’s love, then so are we! Take some time right now to come back to the Father’s love for you. One way of doing this is to take the words of Song of Songs 7.10 and slowly speak them to God: “I belong to my beloved, and his desire is for me.”
