“I bear your name, LORD God Almighty.” Jeremiah 15.16
What is stamped upon us? Some people choose to have permanent tattoos on their bodies, whilst for others the marks they bear may not be as visible, even if they are equally indelible. They may struggle with an inner voice telling them that they are useless, ugly, unlovable or inferior.
The message of the Bible, page after page, is that we are different from that; we are loved, cherished, valuable to God and precious to him. The trouble is that no matter how many times we hear this message, still the inner voice speaks and drags us back. Resolving not to listen to the inner voice is not the solution – how can we not listen when it screams so loudly in every situation in which we find ourselves? Instead, the way forward is to listen to the other voice within us, the voice that longs for us to catch God’s pleasure in us.
Over the next few days, we are going to look at four words that Paul spoke about in the first chapter of Ephesians. He said that we are chosen, adopted, forgiven and marked with the presence of God. Each day we are going to catch the wonder of this truth and seek to hear God’s voice rising above any other.
