‘In the thirty-ninth year of his reign Asa was afflicted with a disease in his feet. Though his disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek help from the Lord, but only from the doctors.’ 2 Chronicles 16.12
This is not a verse to warn us off doctors! King Asa’s mistake was that he only sought the help of the doctors, without recognising that their work was under the hands of God.
It is quite reassuring to regard everyone’s skills as a gift from God to us, no matter whether it is medical skill, the work of a car mechanic or the expertise of a builder. All these people, whether or not they know it, are reflecting something of the God who restores.
We can take this a step further. Our lives - whether it is a skill or simply being the people we are - are reflections of God. Others may or may not recognise this, but we should begin to recognise it for ourselves. What do you bring to other people from God? You may think that modesty forbids you from thinking in such a way, but why not ponder the ways in which God flows through you, so that you can be thankful and let him flow even more.
