‘Wisdom has built her house; she has set up its seven pillars. She has prepared her meat and mixed her wine; she has also set her table.’ Proverbs 9.1-2
You have doubtless needed wisdom many times in your life, perhaps when you were facing a situation beyond your control or when someone was causing you distress by their words or actions. Whatever the cause, the problem was that you simply did not know what to do.
This verse assures us that wisdom exists. It is not a quality that is impossible to find, but instead is ready for us to discover. The book of Proverbs tells us that wisdom is somehow intricately bound to our relationship with God; wisdom is always available for us because God is always there for us. When things get difficult, we are quite good at praying about them, but seeking God’s wisdom is more than just praying about something. It involves being in his presence and listening for his ‘voice’. We often speak about God’s ‘voice’ and this gives the impression that when he speaks to us it sounds the same as anyone else speaking to us. Yet God’s voice of wisdom can take many forms, such as a random thought that comes to mind or a Bible verse that suddenly comes to you.
If you are worried, rather than simply talking to God about it, try listening for his wisdom on the matter. It is always a good idea to share things with a friend, but when you begin to listen for God’s voice it can lead to a deeper relationship with him, where prayer becomes a dialogue and not just a list of concerns you bring to him.
