‘Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God.’ Psalm 146.5
It may seem strange for us to think that our help is the God of Jacob – why bring Jacob into it? He isn’t even our ancestor!
This psalm is about faithfulness. It is about God’s promise to be faithful to us today. Believing in his faithfulness begins with us pondering his faithfulness in the past, for example, his faithfulness to Jacob. If you read the story of Jacob, you may feel God was much more faithful to him than he deserved, since Jacob never really stopped being a deceiver. Despite his faithlessness, God was always faithful and verse 6 goes on to underline this lesson for us – ‘he remains faithful for ever.’
It is interesting that as the psalm continues, all the promises are in the present tense: ‘He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down’ (verses 7-8).
The psalmist was saying that just as God had been faithful in the past to people who may not have deserved it, so he is still faithful to us. God has not changed and we are indeed blessed if we put our hope in such a remarkable God.
