‘…pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.’ 1 Timothy 6.11
There are two aspects to pursuing love: seeking the love of God for us, and longing to show his love to other people. Actually they are very linked. When we have a deeper knowledge of the unconditional, self-sacrificing, all consuming love of God for us, it is bound to affect how we interact with others.
It can be very easy to do things for other people, but with a sense of resentment and bitterness; our actions may seem loving but our hearts are not. One of the best ways to change this is to really take on board God’s love for us; spending time pondering the truths of what the Bible says about this and making them real and personal. Then it is only a short step towards applying these truths to the people we will meet today. What is God’s heart for them? How much does he love them? What does this say about the way we should treat them?
Perhaps one of the most challenging commands of Jesus is in John 15.12: “Love each other as I have loved you.” In other words, this command is based on a profound appreciation of his love for us. Let’s take this love and apply even a little bit of it to those who will cross our paths today, and in this way we will bring joy to the heart of God.
