‘That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead’ Ephesians 1.19-20
Yesterday we recognised the ‘incomparably great power’ that is available for us who believe, and Paul goes on to explore the nature of this power. It is, he says, the same power that raised Christ from the dead. The more we think about it, the more amazing this is! We are all aware of the power that can hurt, kill and bring destruction because sadly we see it on our TV screens and in newspapers almost every day. The power that Paul is talking about here is of a far greater magnitude than this; it is the power to bring life.
This life-giving power is what we need. It is the power that brings life to hard or hopeless situations. All around us we see negative power - even the power of our memories can be destructive and bring so much misery to us – but the power that God brings is creative power that brings life. Jesus said that he came to bring us abundant life; not to dangle it in front of us and then have it snatched away again but to actually bring it to us. He wants this creative power to be ours, and he has provided the Holy Spirit to bring abundant life to us.
If this is true, surely our role is to seek God’s power and not simply live in the pain and destruction that so often surrounds us? Ask God for a vision of what your life could be like. Is it the same or different to what you experience now? Hold on to God’s vision and let it begin to change the way you think.
