‘You saw with your own eyes… the signs and wonders… The LORD your God will do the same’ Deuteronomy 7.19
It is so easy to regard many of the events of the Bible, such as the accounts of Jesus’ birth and some of the healing stories, as simply stories contained within the cover of the Bible. They can seem rather inaccessible to us, as if they belong to a different world.
Yet one of the things that Jesus demonstrated in the events of that first Christmas was that he was with us, and he is still with us today - with the same love, compassion and power. So how do we access such compassion and love in our lives?
It begins with asking. Of course Jesus knows your needs (probably far better than you do!) but the Bible does seem to put great store on asking. It was the people who stepped out from the crowd and fell at his feet who seemed to receive a touch from Jesus. Another ‘ingredient’ seems to be expectation; the belief that Jesus will act on your behalf. Expectation is rather like a door through which God can enter.
If you want to see God at work, a good starting-place is to read one of the stories about Jesus, perhaps an account of him bringing healing. Once you have read it through a couple of times, think about what it would be like to be there watching the events unfold. Just suppose Jesus turned and looked at you. What would you ask him to do and what would be your level of expectation?
Jesus is there with you right now, so why not tell him what you would like him to do and then wait expectantly to see what he does.
