‘”Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”’ Luke 10.36-37
All of us have one question in common: what does God want of us? It would be really helpful if God gave us our day’s instructions each morning so that we would know beyond any doubt that we were doing his will! These verses challenge what we mean by doing God’s will.
God’s will, expressed here in the command of Jesus, is that we should go and be like the Samaritan – showing help and compassion to those whose path we will cross today. Did God specifically tell the Samaritan to care for the wounded man – no; did the Samaritan do God’s will when he cared for him – yes! The instruction is clear: “Go and do likewise.”
This is so releasing as it removes any uncertainty about whether or not we have heard God’s voice correctly. Go and be kind to people, showing care and compassion to those you will come across casually today. By doing this you will be fulfilling God’s will.
