‘We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.’ Hebrews 2.1
No matter what your experience of God or the state of your life at the moment, we all have one danger in common – drifting away from God.
All of us can look back on times when God seemed to be particularly close, or conversely when he felt more distant. On some occasions we can hazard a guess why this might have been the case, but at other times there seems to be no explanation for it. Times of apparent 'dryness' might actually have been important if God was using them to reveal more about himself and new ways of discovering him in prayer. However it is always worth asking the question - have I drifted away from God?
The writer to the Hebrews calls us to be attentive lest we drift away. If you feel this applies to you, don’t be tempted to lay down guidelines about exactly how long you should spend in prayer or reading the Bible, but just give some honest thought to whether you are as attentive to your spiritual life as you have been in the past.
The amazing assurance in this is that God never slackens in his attentiveness to you. He is always with you, and perhaps when you have drifted away from him he is searching for you even more because he misses you. Your attentiveness is not just for your benefit but also for his.
