‘As soon as they left the synagogue, they went with James and John to the home of
Simon and Andrew. Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they immediately told Jesus about her. So he went to her, took her hand and helped her up. The fever left her and she began to wait on them.’ Mark 1.29-31
This story reveals the amazing gentleness of Jesus; he goes over to Simon’s mother-in-law, takes her hand and helps her up.
There can be a fear about the ministry of healing. What will we be asked to do? What will we be asked about? The healing ministry of Jesus was surrounded by gentleness and respect for the people in need. In this story, neither Simon, Andrew nor Simon’s mother-in-law were questioned about their beliefs, moral standing, whether or not they had been particularly holy that week or if they had refrained from sin. They were not made to promise anything. All we are told is that Jesus gently went to her, took her by the hand and restored her.
This is the Jesus we would all love to encounter - a Jesus who comes to us when we are laid low, for whatever reason, and with tender gentleness lifts us up. This is the Jesus revealed to us in the Gospels who stands with you now. Take a moment to catch a sense of his gentle presence with you and tell him about your needs.
