‘…even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.’ Psalm 139.12
Saying that nothing is impossible for God can be something of a cliché in the sense that whilst we know it to be true, it doesn’t really give us any indication of how we might find his presence and power for the things we need. This verse gives us a clue about how we can begin to find faith for our own situations, and it begins with vision.
The concepts of darkness and light can be very powerful. It is easy to regard the things that weigh upon us as ‘darkness’, and our prayer is that the light would come and remove them. This imagery speaks of struggle and fighting, and that is how it often feels. Yet the way this verse puts it is quite different; it speaks of the darkness being the same as light to God. This isn’t the image of a struggle in which we are looking for the Lord’s rescue. He is here already, within the darkness, not wringing his hands with anxiety about what he is going to do and how he will cope, since the light is already there. God can’t draw any closer to you than he is at the moment, since he is already within you.
If you are in a situation that feels like darkness around you, rest in this truth: the light doesn’t have to come because it is already here, with you and within you.
