‘Lord, what are human beings that you care for them, mere mortals that you think of them? They are like a breath; their days are like a fleeting shadow.’ Psalm 144.3-4
How can we be of any significance to God? Before we were born there were countless generations of people, and there will probably be generations after us – so how can we be of any significance to him?
This is not a new question -it was asked by the psalmist thousands of years ago. Yet even as he raised the question, he knew that God did notice him and did care. The very next verses in the psalm go on to speak about God coming down to us, and reaching down to pull us out of deep water. In other words, the fact that our minds may not be able to comprehend the incredible personal nature of the love of God doesn’t negate it; it doesn’t change his heart or his desire to reach down and touch us.
We should let this wonderful truth strengthen our faith. We could never invent a God who would love every one of us with a personal love, nor could we invent a God who would become like us and then die for each of us. We might think we are too small and insignificant for God to count – but thankfully he does not agree with us.
