‘Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead.’ Hebrews 11.19
In his letter to the Hebrews, the author examines some of the ‘heroes’ of the Old Testament to highlight the importance of faith. As he does, we discover snippets about the meaning of faith.
One of those he lifts up is Abraham and the story of Abraham being asked to sacrifice the son who holds so many promises for him. What we learn from this verse is that Abraham’s faith was not based simply on a blind obedience to what God had spoken, but rather that he took time to ponder the command and seek a vision of how the future would work. Perhaps he even had a vision of himself and his son walking back down the mountain. Abraham knew that he had to obey God, but what he also had was a vision of how he was going to do it.
Like Abraham, we are all called to trust God in some way. It may be that our future looks bleak, it may be that we feel an insecurity about our lives, it may be that we are burdened with what we have to get through. It is hard to suddenly be different, or relaxed and happy, when deep down we are not. But what we can do is to start by finding a vision for our day. This can begin by simply asking Jesus where he is for you on this day. Ask him this question and see what image or thought comes to mind. Hold that image in your mind and let that feed your faith for what God can do in you today.
