‘As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace – but now it is hidden from your eyes.”’ Luke 19.41-42
It is sad to read of Jesus weeping over Jerusalem. However it becomes even more tragic when we acknowledge that a city does not consist simply of bricks and buildings but is made up of people; people who will not enjoy what they could have experienced – peace.
Jesus says that the reason for this is because the way of peace has been hidden from them, partly because their leaders have refused to recognise Jesus and all he could do for them.
It is quite amazing that Jesus came as the light of the world, yet our reticence to let the light shine through us means that his light may not be seen. The challenge for us is whether we will be people who reflect Jesus, or people content to keep him hidden? It is not even as if we have to do anything particularly stunning or ground-breaking. Even a kind word can make a huge difference to someone’s life, yet it’s all too easy to pass by, think it doesn’t matter and assume someone else will be there for them.
Today you are quite likely to come across someone in need – perhaps discouraged, sad or without hope – and this is your chance to reflect the light of Jesus so that he can shine into their life.
